Castries Cruise Ports: What to Know

Castries has two main cruise terminals, and your experience can vary depending on where your ship docks.

  • La Place Carenage Cruise Terminal: Virgin Voyages docks at La Place Carenage Cruise Terminal. Located right in the heart of downtown, this port puts you just steps away from top attractions. The Castries Market is only about a 3‑minute walk, and you’ll also find Derek Walcott Square and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception nearby. If your ship docks here, you can easily explore on foot.
  • Pointe Seraphine Cruise Terminal:
Just across the harbor from downtown, Pointe Seraphine is known for its duty-free shopping. It’s about a 15–20‑minute walk (roughly a mile) to the market and historic center, or you can hop in a taxi for a quick ride. This terminal is also a common pickup point for organized shore excursions, including Viator tours that take you beyond the city to see the island’s highlights like the Pitons. This port is where the bigger ships arrive.

No matter where you dock, you’ll find it easy to explore Castries — and with only one day, knowing your port ahead of time helps you make the most of every hour.

One Day in Castries, St. Lucia Itinerary

St. Lucia is a breathtaking island in the Eastern Caribbean, known for its lush rainforests, dramatic volcanic peaks, and golden-sand beaches. Unlike many other islands, St. Lucia perfectly blends natural beauty with vibrant local culture.

1. Marvel at the iconic Pitons

The Pitons
At its heart stand the iconic Pitons, two towering volcanic spires that rise dramatically from the sea and are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In my opinion, Gros Piton and Petit Piton are not to be missed when visiting St. Lucia.

You can take a cruise ship excursion or a Viator tour to the Pitons. The best way is catamaran via sea. It takes about 90 minutes to sail down to the Pitons from Pointe Seraphine. Some trips just sail down for viewing, and others stop for snorkeling.
On the trip, you’ll journey to Soufriere Bay, one of the most picturesque bays on the island. Surrounded by the twin peaks of Gros and Petit Piton, this bay offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. Explore the historic landmarks, learn about the battles between the French and British, and take in the natural beauty of the volcanic mountains.

I’ve been on this Land and Sea Tour. It was very well run and included a lot of stops along the way. It’s an incredible value. The itinerary may change (and may be different from when I went) but it included great time at Sugar Beach, snorkeling, drinks all day, and a huge lunch at a local restaurant. This tour sells out so book ahead.

Jalousie Beach & Sugar Beach

For beach lovers, Jalousie Beach located between the Pitons, boasts white sand and clear waters in a postcard-worthy setting. While public access is available, the beach is primarily located within the Jalousie Plantation Resort. Amenities and accessibility may be limited for non-guests. Snorkeling is a possibility, but seaweed presence can sometimes impact visibility.
Sugar Beach also offers a great spot to hop off and swim. I really enjoyed snorkeling here in the shallow water. I saw some really cool bright red squid all swimming in a row across. I’ve never seen anything like that before!

    2. Sip on a Local Drink

No St. Lucia beach day is complete without a refreshing cocktail. Look for a local rum punch or a chilled Piton beer — named after the island’s beloved peaks. I really enjoy the Piton beer – it’s light and refreshing. (I enjoyed quite a few on this catamaran trip!)

    3. Explore the City of Castries

Take a stroll through Castries City, the nation’s capital. Discover the blend of colonial architecture and modern buildings. Visit the Government House, where the governor-general resides, and snap a photo of the historic military ruins at Fort Rodney. Note that public access to the interior of the building is not available unless a pre-arranged tour is secured.
Visit Derek Walcott Square & The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception
Just a few blocks from the market, you’ll find Derek Walcott Square, a peaceful green space named after the island’s Nobel Prize–winning poet. Nearby stands the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the largest church in the Caribbean, with stunning murals and a quiet, welcoming atmosphere. Both are easy to reach on foot and give you a feel for the island’s history and charm without straying far from port.

I’ve enjoyed walking the city a bit but I’d rather be on the water. The city is a little overwhelming, too. Lots of sales vendors!

    4. Visit the Central Market in Castries

Immerse yourself in local life at the bustling Castries Central Market. Browse colorful stalls selling fresh produce, spices, crafts, and souvenirs. Engage with friendly vendors and consider trying samples of tropical fruits for a true sensory experience.
Tip: Arrive early to avoid the midday rush. The Central Market is just a short walk from the cruise port. If you love trying local flavors, don’t miss the chance to sample St. Lucian street food — a fresh coconut water or a warm patty makes the perfect quick bite.

      5. Unwind at a nearby beach

After a busy morning exploring Castries and an unforgettable trip to the Pitons, it’s time to slow down and enjoy a taste of St. Lucia’s famous beach life. Luckily, you don’t have to travel far from the cruise port to find soft sand and turquoise waters.

      • Vigie Beach – Just a short taxi ride from the port (or even walkable from Pointe Seraphine in about 20 minutes), this long stretch of golden sand is perfect for a quick swim or a lazy afternoon under the sun. It’s quieter than the more resort-heavy beaches further south.
      • La Toc Beach – Tucked away behind the Sandals La Toc resort, this scenic beach is known for its dramatic setting. It’s a great choice if you’d like a more secluded spot to relax before heading back to your ship.
Tip: Pack a lightweight towel and swimsuit in your day bag so you’re ready to jump right in. Most beachside vendors also rent out chairs and umbrellas. Bring cash!

If you’re only going to spend the day at the beach, I recommend taking a taxi to Pigeon Island. It’s much nicer there!

      6. Watch the Sunset from Pigeon Island National Park

If you’ll be on the island into the evening, check out my favorite sunset spot – Pigeon Island National Park. It’s a beach set on a lovely relaxing bay, where the waves are minimal and the water is warm. Located about a 20–25 minute drive north of Castries, this former military fort is now one of St. Lucia’s top heritage sites.
Climb to the ruins of Fort Rodney, where cannons still point out over the bay, and enjoy panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and Martinique on a clear day. The park also has quiet beaches, picnic areas, and shady trails — perfect if you want both culture and relaxation in one stop.
Tip: Because of travel time, Pigeon Island is best if your ship departs later in the evening or if you’re skipping a long excursion to the Pitons. Taxi drivers often offer round-trip fares that include waiting time while you explore, too.

      7. Dinner at Coal Pot Restaurant

Cap off your Castries adventure with an evening meal at Coal Pot Restaurant, a legendary Castries restaurant located right on the water’s edge. Just a short drive (or a pleasant 15‑minute walk) from the cruise terminals, this cozy spot is known for its authentic Creole flavors, fresh seafood, and intimate atmosphere.
Menu favorites include the grilled mahi-mahi, lobster with Creole sauce, and catch of the day, paired with sides like plantains and local vegetables. I loved the fresh mussels in white wine sauce! Renee enjoyed the Mahi Mahi – the plate was even shaped like a fish.

The setting is as memorable as the food – it’s a great vibe! You’ll dine by candlelight and hanging twinkly lights.
      Reservations are recommended.

One Day in Castries: Alternate Options

        Toraille Waterfall

Start your day with a visit to Toraille Waterfall, located south of Soufriere, which is about a 45-minute drive from Castries. This 50-foot waterfall feels like a refreshing massage as the water cascades down. Enjoy the rich rainforest surroundings while taking a dip in the natural pool at the base. Don’t forget your camera – this spot is perfect for capturing the beauty of St. Lucia.

        Sulphur Springs

Visit Sulphur Springs, a dormant volcanic complex known for its bubbling mud pools and steam vents. You can drive near the caldera to witness these fascinating geological features. Take a mud bath for a natural spa treatment – your skin will thank you!

        Lookout Points

Take a walk or climb up to the lookout points for stunning vistas. Castries City Viewpoint offers breathtaking views of the city, blue waters, and the surrounding mountains (visibility may vary). Marigot Bay Viewpoint provides another perspective, showcasing the bay’s historical significance and stunning coastal scenery.

        Rainforest Adventure

St. Lucia’s rainforest covers more than 19,000 acres and is home to over 150 plant species, native birds, and hidden waterfalls. Visitors can explore through guided hikes, aerial tram rides, or zipline tours, with trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging treks. The rainforest provides a cooler escape from the coast and a chance to experience the island’s diverse ecosystems up close. I really enjoyed the aerial tram, though it was way high up!

        • Pointe Seraphine: Located closer to the city, reaching downtown Castries from this port is easily manageable by foot within 15-20 minutes.

Is Castries, St. Lucia Safe for Tourists?

Castries, St. Lucia is considered safe for tourists, but it’s important to remain cautious and aware of your surroundings. While violent crime is rare, petty crimes such as pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded tourist areas.
To stay safe, keep your belongings secure, avoid displaying expensive items, and be cautious when using ATMs. It’s also advisable to stay in well-lit and populated areas, especially at night.

Castries is a major Caribbean cruise port and over a million tourists visit the island each year. I’ve felt very safe during the three times that I’ve been to the island – I stayed for a week my first time and we took taxis around as two mid-twenties women. People were very kind to us!

How Do You Get Around in St. Lucia?

Most people who will only be in Castries, St. Lucia for one day are cruise passengers. It’s best for cruise passengers to take a tour to experience the beautiful sights that St. Lucia has to offer, as many of the sights, like the Pitons, are far from Castries.
If you want to stay near Castries, taxis are readily available near the cruise ports, marked by light blue number plates with a TX prefix. You can find them at airports and taxi stands, or arrange them for places like restaurants, hotels, or homes. Make sure to agree on the fare before you go, as it can vary depending on where you’re going and how many people are with you.
If you’re arriving by plane, you can also rent a car at Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) in Vieux Fort, about 35 miles south of Castries

        • Carry water and snacks to stay refreshed: It’s important to stay hydrated and energized throughout the day. Carry a water bottle and some snacks to keep you going between meals. Check to see if your tour includes food.
        • Wear comfortable shoes for walking: Castries has many attractions that are best explored on foot. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes to avoid discomfort and enjoy your day exploring the city.
Use sunscreen to protect against the sun: The sun in Castries can be strong, especially during the day. Be sure to apply sunscreen regularly to protect your skin from sunburn.
        • Mind the Clock: St. Lucia is laid-back, but your ship won’t be! Plan to be back at the terminal at least 30–45 minutes before all aboard to avoid any stress.
