What to Wear on an Alaska Cruise: Packing List & Outfit Ideas for Any Weather

Figuring out what to wear on an Alaska cruise can feel overwhelming—the weather changes fast, excursions vary, and cruise evenings still call for polished outfits. Alaska is a destination of extremes: chilly, windy mornings watching glaciers from the bow, and surprisingly sunny afternoons lounging on deck near Seattle.

The secret to packing for an Alaska cruise? Layers. Lots of them.

I didn’t over-pack but I did bring pieces that worked double-duty. And, I did laundry onboard!

Think cozy leggings you can wear on repeat, sturdy sneakers for exploring ports, and a simple black dress that feels just right for dinner.

Here’s exactly what I wore, with links to similar pieces you can grab for your own trip. Most are from Amazon since it’s easy to shop, but I’ll note a few brand favorites too.

What Is the Weather Like on an Alaska Cruise?

  • Temperatures range from 40s–60s°F
  • Wind on decks and glacier viewing
  • Frequent rain
  • Cooler mornings and evenings
  • Heated indoor spaces

With Alaska’s unpredictable weather in mind, here’s exactly what I wore on my Alaska cruise—broken down by daytime outfits, outerwear, shoes, and evening looks.

Casual Alaska Cruise Outfits for Daytime & Port Days

I wore a brown romper on repeat. It worked for walking around the ship and for exploring ports like Vancouver. With flats, it felt casual but pulled together to match the luxurious vibe of the Regent Seven Seas Explorer.

  • Romper – perfect for walking the ship. I love rompers – one article of clothing for top and bottom. I wear these on all my cruises but this one is my favorite for cold weather (pictured below!)
  • Dress Flats – when adding a bit of style

Best Outerwear for an Alaska Cruise (Cold, Wind & Rain)

Alaska evenings are chilly and rain is common, so a warm coat and layers are non-negotiable.

  • Waterproof Winter Coat with Hood – Essential for rain, wind, and cold mornings on deck
  • Fleece Zip-Up – A warm mid-layer that’s lightweight and easy to pack, or outer layer for a warmer day
  • The North Face Zip-Up Fleece – Perfect outer-layer for days that aren’t so cold. I wear this one all the time at home, too. The North Face is worth the investment!
  • Winter Hat – Small but mighty for staying warm in the wind. This one is lined with satin!
  • Neck Gaiter – Easy to pack and surprisingly helpful during glacier viewing. This one is top-rated and very affordable!

These layers allowed me to stay comfortable without overpacking, no matter what the weather decided to do.

Best Shoes to Wear on an Alaska Cruise

You walk a lot on an Alaska cruise vacation. Ports, excursions, ship decks, so wearing good shoes make all the difference. Here are the best shoes to wear on an Alaska cruise.

  • Nike Running Shoes – ideal for port walking & excursions. These Nike running shoes were perfect for Alaska cruise excursions because they’re lightweight, waterproof-friendly, and comfortable for long port days.
  • Sorel Winter Boots – great for cold or wet days. These are my go-to winter boots. If you’re doing heavy snow activities, bring these!
  • Wool Socks – moisture-wicking and warm. I live in these wool socks in cold weather!

What to Wear to Dinner on an Alaska Cruise

Luxury cruise dinners deserve a little polish. I didn’t go overboard, but I did pack a few cocktail pieces.

I kept evening outfits simple and repeated pieces without feeling under-dressed or out of place.

While some restaurants on luxury cruise lines tend to be a tad more polished, resturants like Rojo on the Brilliant Lady invite for very casual wear. Be yourself!

Alaska Cruise Clothing Essentials You Shouldn’t Skip

  • Soft Leggings – The exact butty soft leggings I love! Ideal for lounging, excursions, and travel days.
Ladies – if you take away ONE thing from this post, let it be these leggings. I’ve purchased at least ten pairs in black and other colors.
  • White Fuzzy Sweater – Cozy, neutral, and easy to dress up or down
  • Swimsuit – Cruise ships have heated pools, hot tubs, and spas — even in Alaska
  • Comfortable Robe – A comfortable robe is game-changer for lounging around the cabin or on the balcony.

Luxury cruise lines, like Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Explora Journeys provide a robe in cabin. However, Virgin Voyages does not provide a robe outside of Rockstar and MegaRockstar categories. Many mainline cruise lines don’t provide a robe etiher.
I’ve linked the cozy soft robe that I wear at home because I use the included robes when I sail!
Picture yourself in your hammock on the Brilliant Lady in this robe!

These simple staples made packing stress-free and helped me stay comfortable from port days to cozy nights onboard.

Consider Laundry Services When Planning What to Wear on An Alaska Cruise

One of the top inclusions I love with Regent Seven Seas Cruises is complimentary laundry. When I sailed, I could re-wear favorites like leggings and sweaters without worrying about over-packing. I sent my laundry out every third day or so, alternating my favorite pieces and just two sets of pajamas.

Explora Journeys offers a laundry room, where you can do your own wash & dry at no additional cost. The brand supplies detergent, too. You can also pay for wash & fold or dry cleaning service.

Virgin Voyages is not all-inclusive. Virgin Voyages offers done-for-you laundry services. A huge bag costs $55 or $75 for express delivery. Loyalty Deep Blue Extra members get this included as a perk (reasons to sail more!) You can get a lot in that bag – so plan to do laundry mid-way through your trip. Wash and dry cleaning is also offered by the piece.

Other lines offer varying levels of laundry service. If your cruise line doesn’t offer laundry, choose lightweight, quick-dry fabrics so you can wash and hang things as needed, too. These laundry sheets can help you wash in a pinch.

FAQs: What to Wear on an Alaska Cruise

Q: Do I need winter clothes for an Alaska cruise?
A: No matter when you’re visiting Alaska, you do need warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and insulated accessories like a hat and gloves. As for heavy winter coats and clothes – it depends. I visited at the end of May and I run cold, so I usually wore my winter coat outside with wool socks and waterproof boots. If you’re not sure, it’s better to bring warmer clothes in case you want them.

Q: Are jeans okay for an Alaska cruise?
A: Yes, but leggings or quick-dry pants are more comfortable for excursions and layering. Check the dress code for the cruise line you are sailing on. Regent Seven Seas Cruises restaurants, Explora Journeys restaurants, and Virgin Voyages restaurants all have more relaxed dress codes for evening activities. Line like Cunard and Silversea do not allow you to wear jeans in restaurants or bars after 6 p.m.

Q: Do Alaska cruises have formal nights?
A: Most cruises have smart-casual or cocktail attire rather than black-tie formalwear. Check your individual sailings’ event schedule to decide what to bring for evening wear!
